I’ve always been baffled by the woman’s head covering. At first it appears that her hair is somehow tied under her chin. But she seems to be wearing a transparent cap held in place by a black band. In that case, why is the chinstrap the same dark colour as her hair?

I can not see how the ermine could have been added later⁉️ the entire structure of the painting and her body is around the ermine, her right arm and hand on top, her arm underneath it, even her shoulder posture curved as you would holding something. Take the ermine away and it would look ridiculous. He would not have painted over a static woman without the ermine, It simply would have to be entirely redone.
